Introduction to Astoria
& Epic for Authors
Duration: 4 days
Description: This course is designed to give attendees the
basic skills to use the Astoria Database and the integrated EPIC Editor to
author and edit SGML/XML markup. The course covers
topics such as:
- Understanding the Astoria user interface
- Navigating the repository
- Checking content in and out of the repository
- Searching
- Reusing content
- Understanding the EPIC user interface
- Navigating and setting preferences
- Text editing operations
- Element and attribute operations
- Working with graphics, tables and special characters
- Using various Epic features
Format: The course consists of lectures/demonstrations by the instructor punctuated by hands-on exercises by the attendees.
Comments: The course assumes a basic knowledge of SGML/XML; however an optional 1/2 day Introduction to SGML/XML for Authors module can be included at the beginning of the course if desired.
The course does not cover Astoria administration functions such as setting up users and security privileges.
The course does not normally cover Epic's specialized profiling and equation functionality; however, these can be incorporated into the course if desired.
The course does not cover FOSI development or EPIC administration topics, such as setting up and maintaining custom doctypes or modifying various EPIC .ini and configuration files.
