Introduction to XML/SGML for Authors

Description: This course introduces authors to the basic XML/SGML concepts they will need to
understand to begin working with a structured authoring tool to create SGML/XML documents. The course
introduces students to markup and provides a context for understanding the
role of XML technology in the workplace.
Topics covered include:
- A brief history of SGML/XML
- The components of a typical content creation, management and delivery solution
- Types of SGML/XML tools
- Business cases for SGML/XML
- The role of the author in an SGML/XML based system
- Markup basics: elements and attributes
- Special objects: graphics, tables, equations and special characters
Format: The course consists of lectures/demonstrations by the instructor punctuated by hands-on exercises by the attendees.
